Marwell Zoo Keeper Reflects on the Privileges and Responsibilities of Working with Endangered Species
Rhiannon Wolff, a dedicated hoofstock animal keeper at Marwell Zoo in Hampshire, England, shares her unique perspective on the privileges and challenges of working with endangered species. Wolff's daily routine involves a range of tasks, from cleaning and nutritional enrichment to record-keeping, behavior observation, and even faecal collection. One of her favorite species is the Przewalski's horse, a wild relative of domestic horses. These sturdy, feisty creatures have a unique history, having been descended from just 12 captive individuals after their wild population was declared extinct. Wolff describes them as 'chunky little things' that require careful handling due to their feisty nature and the harsh environment they inhabit.
Wolff's work extends beyond the zoo, as she has been involved in the conservation of Przewalski's horses. In January 2023, two female horses, Shara and Togs, embarked on a journey back to their native Kazakhstan, marking a significant milestone in their conservation. Wolff's role in their care and preparation for this journey was a bittersweet experience, as she worked closely with them from birth to their departure.
Despite the emotional impact of these departures, Wolff remains dedicated to her work, focusing on the remaining Przewalski's horse group, which consists of seven females. The team is planning to introduce a new stallion to expand the herd, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to conservation and the importance of these animals' survival.
