The Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, powered by T-Mobile, is set to revolutionize Major League Baseball this season. This innovative system promises to bring a new level of accuracy and strategy to the sport, and we got a glimpse of its potential during the first day of games in 2026.
On Friday, the ABS system made its debut in the Cactus and Grapefruit League Spring Training games. While it was tested in similar games last year, this marked the first time the system was put to the test in a real-world setting. Across five games, 23 challenges were utilized, resulting in an average of 4.6 challenges per game.
The success rate was impressive, with 13 calls overturned, giving the system a solid 56.5 percent success rate. The most exciting action took place during the D-backs and Rockies game at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, where the teams combined for seven challenges, with six of them proving successful.
The D-backs demonstrated their prowess, successfully challenging four out of their five calls, the highest number of attempts and successes for any team on Friday. The Rockies also performed well, going 2-for-2 in their challenges. Interestingly, the Orioles, Mariners, and Royals were the only teams that did not issue a challenge, and the Orioles were the only club that didn't have a successful challenge on Friday.
