Attention: Adverse Weather Alert for Bath University Campus
A severe weather warning has been issued for late Thursday, January 8th, through to midday Friday, January 9th. We are closely monitoring the forecast and will provide further updates if conditions worsen. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our community, and we will take necessary precautions to keep the campus operational as much as possible.
In the event of any restrictions, we will communicate through the following channels:
- SafeZone App: Download the app (https://www.bath.ac.uk/campaigns/the-university-safezone-app/) and enable notifications for real-time updates. You can also join the Adverse Weather Group (https://www.bath.ac.uk/announcements/sign-up-to-safezone-user-groups-for-travel-alerts-and-adverse-weather-warnings/) to receive SMS alerts.
- Email: All-staff and all-student emails will be sent with important updates.
- Social Media: Follow our University Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/uniofbath/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/uniofbath/) accounts for quick notifications.
- Website: Updates will be posted on the University homepage (https://www.bath.ac.uk/homepage/), staff homepage (https://www.bath.ac.uk/staff/), and student homepage (https://www.bath.ac.uk/students).
If we need to restrict access to campus and University buildings, we will inform you promptly. In the meantime, here's what you need to know about the potential impact of snow and sleet:
- Slippery Surfaces: Many surfaces, including stairways, may become wet and icy. Our Campus Services team will grit and prepare surfaces, but please exercise caution when walking around campus. Health and Safety guidelines suggest:
- Walking slowly, not running.
- Wearing non-slip footwear.
- Allowing extra time for your journey, similar to driving in bad weather.
- Keeping hands free to aid balance and prevent falls.
- Sticking to footpaths and avoiding steep banks and inclines.
- Taking extra care when walking, cycling, or driving on hills.
- Never attempting to walk on frozen water areas, including the lake, as it is extremely hazardous (https://www.rospa.com/leisure-water-safety/water/advice/ice).
University Staff: If you plan to travel to campus, please plan ahead. Check the Met Office website for updates and allow extra time for travel disruptions. Familiarize yourself with the University's policy on staff attendance during adverse weather conditions (https://www.bath.ac.uk/publications/severe-adverse-weather-or-major-transport-incident-staff-attendance-and-arrangements/). If you need to work remotely, you can prepare to access University systems and applications using your own device (https://www.bath.ac.uk/guides/preparing-yourself-to-work-from-home/).
University Students: Your department may schedule online teaching or assessments if in-person sessions are not feasible due to weather. They will contact you directly if this is the case. If you need a warm and safe space, our drop-in Study Spaces (https://www.bath.ac.uk/campaigns/where-you-can-study-on-campus-and-in-the-city/) include the Library, 10East, Polden Commons, and the Virgil Building in the city.
Make sure to download the SafeZone app and enable notifications. Stay informed, stay safe, and let's navigate these challenging weather conditions together!
