Aryna Sabalenka's Green and Gold Triumph in Brisbane: A Dominant Performance
Aryna Sabalenka, donning the colors of green and gold, claimed her second Brisbane International title on Sunday, defeating Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-3 in a swift 1 hour and 18 minutes at Pat Rafter Arena. This victory marks her fifth in Australia and her 22nd career title, pushing her past Victoria Azarenka for the third-most WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz titles among active players, behind Venus Williams and Iga Swiatek.
Sabalenka's dominance continued throughout the week, as she won the trophy without dropping a set, despite Kostyuk's valiant efforts in the final. Her high-level tennis was on full display, with wins over Madison Keys and Karolina Muchova, and a strong performance against Kostyuk.
The Ukrainian player, Kostyuk, put up a fierce fight, earning three Top 10 victories over Amanda Anisimova, Mirra Andreeva, and Jessica Pegula. However, it wasn't enough to secure her first title since 2023 or her first above the WTA 250 level, as Sabalenka's early dominance proved too much.
In the match, Sabalenka held serve and broke early, taking a 2-0 lead. Kostyuk responded with three straight games to level the set at 3-3. The set remained tight until the 10th game, when Sabalenka seized a small opening, breaking again to take the first set. She finished the set with a perfect 100% first-serve success rate.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Sabalenka holding serve and breaking for an early 2-0 lead. Kostyuk couldn't mount a comeback this time, as Sabalenka's consistent play and strategic shot-making, including a combination drop shot and crosscourt forehand winner, sealed the match with a comfortable service hold.
Despite not maintaining a perfect serve, Sabalenka's performance was impressive, winning 81% of her first-serve points and facing only three break points, losing just one. She converted three of her eight break chances, showcasing her ability to capitalize on opportunities.
With her first title of 2026 secured, Sabalenka now turns her attention to the Australian Open, where she is the defending runner-up. She enters as the No. 1 seed, aiming to secure her third title in Melbourne. Kostyuk, on the other hand, will return to the Top 20 in the PIF WTA Rankings and is poised for a deeper Australian Open run, aiming to improve on her third-round exit from last year.
