In a surprising turn of events, Robert Playter, the well-respected CEO of Boston Dynamics, has announced his departure from the company. Having joined Boston Dynamics back in 1994, Playter took the reins as CEO in 2019 during a pivotal moment for the organization, guiding it through its acquisition by Hyundai just a year later in 2020. His final day at the helm will be February 27, 2026, as he embarks on his retirement journey.
Stepping in as interim CEO will be Amanda McMaster, who currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Boston Dynamics. She will temporarily lead the company while the board of directors seeks a permanent successor to Playter.
Playter’s tenure as CEO was marked by significant transitions for Boston Dynamics. The firm, traditionally recognized for its cutting-edge research platforms—such as the hydraulically-powered Atlas humanoid robot—was making strides to commercialize its innovative technologies. Under Playter’s leadership, products like Spot, Stretch, and the latest electric Atlas version were successfully brought to market.
Since its launch in 2020, Spot, the company’s four-legged robot, has found applications across various industrial sectors. A notable example is its deployment at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where decommissioning teams utilized Spot to assess the disaster site and strategize future actions. In his farewell email to the staff, Playter reflected on his 30-plus years at the company, filled with pride for what they accomplished together. He stated, "Today, I face the tough choice to step down as CEO of Boston Dynamics. As we transition, Amanda McMaster will take on the role of interim CEO, while our Board of Directors seeks the next leader for our incredible team. We’ll hold an all-employee meeting this week to celebrate our achievements and finalize the transition. My last working day will be February 27."
He also acknowledged the significant challenges the company faced when he became CEO at a crucial juncture. "Our goal was to evolve from an innovation hub into a sustainable business while keeping the remarkable talent and culture intact that drove our success. Reflecting on his extraordinary journey at Boston Dynamics, Playter expressed amazement at how far the company has come since its early days in the MIT Media Lab’s basement. Many of my most fulfilling experiences have come from being part of a team. Leading this group has been one of the greatest honors of my life."
