Canada's wildfires have been a growing concern, and a recent study sheds light on a critical aspect often overlooked: the emissions from below the surface. The research, conducted by McMaster University scientists, reveals a surprising finding: the majority of the planet-warming emissions from these fires originate from soil and peat, not the trees themselves. This discovery is particularly alarming as it suggests that even with improved forest management, the underlying issue remains. The study estimates that approximately three-quarters of the emissions came from the underground burning of soil and peat, a significant portion of which is carbon-rich. This finding is especially concerning given the ongoing fire season in Ontario, where blazes are encroaching upon the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the world's second-largest peat complex. The implications are far-reaching, as these fires release vast amounts of carbon dioxide, equivalent to Canada's annual greenhouse gas emissions.
