Costco is making headlines with its recent announcement: the retail giant will temporarily close all 623 of its warehouses for a full 24 hours. This decision has significant implications for shoppers, especially as they seek celebratory items during this busy season.
The closure, set for January 1st to mark New Year’s Day—a recognized federal holiday—means that many customers will need to turn to competing retailers to fulfill their shopping needs. On December 31st, shoppers will have to adjust their plans, as Costco will operate on limited hours. Executive members, who pay an annual fee of $130 for additional benefits, will have access to the store from 9 AM to 5 PM, while regular members can shop between 10 AM and 5 PM. This early access is one of the perks that comes with being part of Costco's executive membership program.
It’s worth noting that Costco typically closes only seven days each year, with Christmas Day being the most recent closure. The other holidays when the stores are shut include Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.
As of now, Costco operates 623 locations, and you must hold a paid membership to shop there. Additionally, several other major retailers in the U.S. will also close for New Year’s Day. Sam’s Club, for instance, plans to shut its doors entirely on January 1, allowing members to shop only on the previous day with reduced hours. Trader Joe’s, along with most banks and post offices, will also be closed. In contrast, many retailers like Walmart will maintain standard operating hours, and Target is expected to open with modified hours, so it’s advisable for shoppers to verify local store hours before heading out. Local grocery stores may also choose to remain open, depending on their staffing and stock availability.
Looking ahead, Costco is preparing for an exciting 2026 with five key changes that promise to enhance the shopping experience:
1. New Warehouses: The company plans to open at least 35 new locations next year, expanding its reach significantly.
2. Innovative Technology: Costco is rolling out new self-checkout technology that aims to speed up the checkout process by 20%, allowing employees to scan items directly in customers’ carts before they check out.
