Tanzania's Small-Scale Mining Sector: A Pillar of National Development
The Tanzanian government is taking bold steps to revolutionize the country's small-scale mining industry, ensuring its long-term sustainability and contribution to the national economy. The initiative, known as the Mining for A Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) program, is a testament to the government's commitment to empowering its citizens and fostering economic growth.
During a visit to the Rombo District in Kilimanjaro Region, Deputy Minister of Minerals Dr. Steven Kiruswa expressed pride in the progress made by small-scale miners, particularly those extracting Pozzolana minerals and volcanic bricks. He highlighted the sector's pivotal role in stimulating and interconnecting various economic sectors, including construction, industry, trade, agriculture, and water.
The MBT program, administered by the Ministry of Minerals, aims to provide small-scale miners, especially youth and women, with essential mining licenses and modern equipment. This strategic move is designed to enhance their production capabilities and boost overall productivity.
Dr. Kiruswa emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring that small-scale miners actively participate in the national economy, fostering progress and inclusivity. The program's success is already evident in the Rombo District, where the presence of Pozzolana minerals has not only boosted the local economy but also provided employment opportunities for the youth.
Rombo District Commissioner Raymond Mwangwala attributed the district's economic growth to the Pozzolana minerals, which are derived from volcanic ash and used in the production of high-strength cement. This mineral-rich district has seen a significant increase in income for the Rombo District Council, showcasing the tangible benefits of the mining sector.
Furthermore, the Kilimanjaro Regional Resident Mining Officer, Engineer Abel Madaha, revealed impressive revenue figures for the mining sector in the region. From July to November 2025, the sector generated 1.63 billion shillings, surpassing the annual target of 4.2 billion shillings for the 2025/2026 financial year. This achievement underscores the effective management and positive response from miners, contributing significantly to the country's development.
The success of the MBT program and the mining sector's overall growth serve as a testament to Tanzania's commitment to sustainable development and economic empowerment. As the country continues to prioritize the mining industry, it is poised to unlock further economic opportunities and ensure a brighter future for its citizens.
