Big changes could be coming to Long Island's retail landscape, and it’s sparking both excitement and debate. Walmart is once again pushing to transform one of its existing Long Island stores into a supercenter, this time setting its sights on the Riverhead location. During a pre-submission conference with the Riverhead Planning Department on Tuesday, Walmart representatives outlined their vision for the store at 1890 Old Country Rd. The plan? To expand the current 167,000-square-foot store to 180,000 square feet, adding a full-service supermarket and a dedicated online pickup area. Alek Kociski of Bohler Engineering explained the proposed changes, which include updates to parking, landscaping, and the building itself. The Planning Department provided feedback, which Walmart will incorporate before submitting an official site plan.
This isn’t Walmart’s first attempt to grow its Long Island footprint. Last year, the retailer sought approvals to expand stores in East Meadow and Islandia into supercenters, though those proposals are still under review. Walmart currently operates 14 stores on Long Island, including a Sam’s Club in Medford, a Neighborhood Market in Levittown, and three existing supercenters.
In a statement, Walmart expressed pride in its 25-year history in Riverhead, stating, ‘We are excited about the opportunity to bring expanded grocery offerings, services, and new career opportunities to the community.’ But this is the part most people miss: while supercenters offer one-stop shopping, they often compete directly with smaller, locally owned businesses.
