The Legacy of a Title Fades
The United States Championship, a title with a rich history, has seen better days. With roots stretching back to 1975 as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship, it has witnessed some extraordinary reigns. Lex Luger's 523-day reign, an unparalleled benchmark, is a testament to its former glory. Yet, in recent times, the title has become a mere doorknob, passed around with little significance.
The Downward Spiral
The decline began in 2024. LA Knight, after winning the title from Logan Paul at SummerSlam, found himself lost in the shuffle, overshadowed by a feud between Carmelo Hayes and Andrade. Then, in a surprising turn, Knight lost the title to Shinsuke Nakamura at Survivor Series, a move seemingly more about WWE's plans in Japan than Nakamura's resurgence. Knight regained the title in Philadelphia, but his second reign was shorter than the time it took to draft the Constitution. He lost it to Jacob Fatu, who was on a roll, only to see his streak abruptly ended by Solo Sikoa, a man Fatu had once praised.
A Series of Short-Lived Reigns
Sikoa's victory seemed more like a token of appreciation for his past feuds with Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. His reign, too, was short-lived, as Sami Zayn took the title, vowing to use it as a springboard for a world championship campaign. Zayn's revival of the U.S. Title Open Challenge backfired when Ilja Dragunov, returning from injury, seized the title 49 days into Zayn's run. Dragunov's reign, however, was cut short, as he lost the championship to Carmelo Hayes at the SmackDown taping.
The Future of the Title
Hayes' win over Dragunov could be a sign of a push, but history suggests otherwise. WWE has a recent track record of short-lived reigns, with champions like Nakamura, Knight, Fatu, Sikoa, Zayn, and Dragunov all failing to hold onto the title for long. For the United States Championship to regain its prestige, a prolonged and meaningful title run is essential. Otherwise, Hayes risks becoming just another name in a long line of champions, with the title changing hands so frequently that it loses all significance.
And this is the part most people miss: the United States Championship needs a hero, a champion who can carry the title with pride and make it mean something again. Will Carmelo Hayes be that hero? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the title's luster must be restored, or it risks becoming a mere afterthought in WWE's grand scheme.
